Frequently asked questions
What is Esports?
Esports is the term used to describe all forms of competitive gaming that emphasize teamwork, communication, strategic planning, and critical thinking skills. It's enjoyed by a growing community in Hawaii and beyond.
Who are our coaches?
Our coaches are volunteers from the ʻIolani faculty, community volunteers, and alumni who are passionate about providing a safe, rigorous, world-class esports competitive environment for our students.
What games do we play?
Currently, we are field any game that offers collegiate scholarships. The main titles are League of Legends, Valorant, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Rocket League.
What leagues do we play in?
We participate in three different leagues: PlayVS, High School Esports League, and Vanta Leagues. Students compete in leagues based on their game titles and skill levels.
Do I need my own equipment to play?
All equipment for matches is provided by the school, but students are encouraged to have their own equipment for practice at home. Additionally, students are allowed to bring in their own equipment if they prefer.
Who supports Esports equipment at ‘Iolani School?
All equipment is generously donated by the coaches, private alumni, and the community. We are grateful for everyone's support.
How much time will esports take up?
Similar to traditional sports, esports requires students to attend matches and practices. Matches are typically held on weekdays, and students have the option to play either in the lab or at home. The team's practice schedule is flexible, depending on the availability of the coach and teammates.
Does esports count as a PE requirement?
Starting from Fall 2021, esports players are eligible to receive PE credit. To qualify, they must attend workouts twice a week throughout the season.
